Cellular phone radiation - are there any health issues?
How would electromagnetic radiation harm the human body?
Exposure to high levels of electromagnetic radiation results in heating of the object, material, tissue, etc exposed. This is how microwave ovens cook food. However, the level of radiation used by cellular phones is much lower and doesn't even come close to producing heat.
Can cell phone radiation cause cancer or other health problems?
There is no scientific evidence proving that mobile phone radiation can lead to cancer or other sickness problems, such as headaches, dizziness or memory loss. However, organizations in the United States and overseas are sponsoring research and investigating claims of possible health effects related to exposure to cell phone radiation. The Federal government is monitoring the results of this ongoing research, and the Federal Drug Administration is participating in an industry-funded research project to further investigate possible biological side effects.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set certain limits for the level of radiation used by wireless devices marketed in the United States. These are the exposure levels recommended by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP). The FCC also consulted with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and other federal agencies, obtaining support for the FCC’s exposure limits as being safe for human health.
Before marketing a cell or PCS phone in the United States, manufacturers must demonstrate to the FCC that their phones comply with FCC limits for safe cell phone radiation exposure.
